General questions

Whatever type of Accu-Chek meter you have, cleaning and disinfecting are important for good maintenance.
While cleaning is simply removing dirt from the meter, disinfecting refers to removing as much of the disease-causing microorganisms and other germs as possible.

When to clean or disinfect your Accu-Chek Meter:
You should clean and disinfect your meter once a week, or any time blood gets on it. You should also clean your meter before allowing anyone else to handle it.

What to use when cleaning and disinfecting your Accu-Chek Meter:
Use mild dishwashing liquid mixed with water to clean your meter and 70% isopropyl alcohol to disinfect your meter.

The parts of your Accu-Chek meter you should keep clean:
Be sure to clean the areas around slots and openings, while being careful not to get any moisture in them.
You should also wipe down the entire meter surface, including the meter display.

Learn more about cleaning and disinfecting your meter in the user manual.

All information is saved when you change the batteries of any Accu-Chek meter, including the memory, your logbook data, test results, diary information and settings, however you should check that the time and date are correct when you’ve inserted new batteries.

Performing a control test lets you know the meter and test strips are working properly.

Reasons to perform a control test include, but are not limited to:
1. You open a new test strip box.
2. Your test result does not match how you feel.
3. The test strips were stored in extreme temperatures or high humidity.
4. The test strip container was left open.

There’s no need to manually code any of our meters, so you have fewer steps in testing.

The Accu-Chek Instant meters has a fast test time of less than four seconds.

No, the USB port for any of the Accu-Chek meters is not water or dust resistant.

With the Accu-Chek Instant meter, it is not necessary to delete stored results. Once 720 blood glucose results are in the memory; adding a new result causes the oldest one to be deleted.

No. As seen with almost all products designed for self-monitoring, the Accu-Chek Instant meter cannot be used for diagnosis of diabetes.

The Accu-Chek Instant meters can be used for Alternative Site Testing (AST) on the palm, forearm and upper arm. Please refer to the user manual and speak to your healthcare professional for more information.

No, the Accu-Chek Instant meter does not require manual coding.

Using an Accu-Chek meter connected to the mySugr app will enable you to automatically and wirelessly capture your blood sugar readings, and store all of your readings and other important diabetes information in one easily accessible place. This could help to make your diabetes management easier.

The Accu-Chek Instant meter can only pair and synchronise data with one Bluetooth enabled device at a time. Once the meter has been paired, pairing with a new device will overwrite the original pairing.

iOS users can pair a maximum of three blood glucose meters. Android devices allow a maximum of one meter to pair.

Can I retrieve my data when I reinstall the mySugr app in the new smartphone? When you create your mySugr account, your data is stored with that account in a secure and compliant manner. If you change mobile devices or have to re-install the mySugr app, pair your meter to the app. Data synchronisation with the app happens automatically as soon as the app has connection to the internet, users don’t have to do manual backups.

We recommend that the lancets are stored in their original packaging. Keep your drums clean and protect them from extremes of temperature.

It is important to dispose of used lancets so they do not cause injury. Whilst used Accu-Chek Softclix lancets can safely be disposed of in household waste, some local councils provide a sharps disposal service by supplying individuals with sharps bins and collecting them when they are full. Check with the local council which disposal services are available.

The most comfortable setting of your Accu-Chek Softclix lancing device will depend on a few things:

  • Your skin – softer, thinner skin requires a shallower setting than thicker skin.
  • The required blood sample – the more blood you require, the higher the setting you'll need.
  • The optimal penetration depth is a combination of both. Start with a low setting when using the device for the first time. Adjust to a higher setting until the blood volume is correct.

No, check the use by date on the test strip container. Do not use test strips past the use by date.

An E4 displays on the meter, indicating not enough blood was drawn into the test strip for measurement or blood was applied after the test had started. You should discard the test strip and repeat the blood sugar test.

The system automatically detects when enough blood has been applied to the strip and begins the test, even if some yellow is still visible. The only time you need to apply more blood is when the blood drop symbol continues to flash in the display.

It's a small sample—just 0.6 microliter.

There are a few ways you can improve blood flow and make blood sugar testing easier: Warm your fingers by washing with warm, soapy water, then rinse and dry completely. Let your arm hang down at your side to increase blood flow to the fingertips. Grasp finger just below the joint closest to the fingertip and massage gently toward tip of finger, then squeeze for 3 seconds. Use an Accu-Chek lancing device set to the right penetration depth for your skin type. Refer to your user guide for additional information.

When going on holiday, you should always take extra supplies to make sure that you are covered for anything that might happen during your trip.

Remember to take the following with you when you go away:

• Plenty of cannula and infusion sets
• Spare batteries
• Insulin and pump cartridges
• Test strips and lancets
• Emergency contact details
• Fast acting carbohydrate to treat hypos
• Travel letter from hospital / diabetes team
• Details of how to manage illness / pump failure or loss
• Back up insulin pens, cartridges and needles

Your insulin pump allows you to quickly and precisely adjust your insulin levels before, during and after exercise, to carefully match your individual needs.

All Accu-Chek insulin pumps are suitable to use during most types of exercise, however we recommend that you remove the insulin pump before taking part in any contact sports (e.g. rugby or martial arts) in order to prevent damage to the device or harm to yourself.

Many theme park rides, such as rollercoasters, are operated by high powered magnetic equipment, which have the potential to affect your insulin pump. Please check with the Theme Park Occupational Health and Safety officer about the magnetic equipment they use and what distance in meters / feet the field surrounds them. When within these fields do not wear or operate your insulin pump.

Please disconnect from your insulin pump and leave it in a safe place until you are no longer within the range of these magnets. If there is nowhere safe for you to leave your insulin pump, you should take it with you, however you will need to put it in STOP mode and disconnect it from your body before entering the field of exposure. Leave your insulin pump in STOP mode until you are outside the magnetic field. When it is safe to do so, please reconnect and START your insulin pump. Please remember to check your blood glucose levels before and after entering the field of exposure.

Always carry backup supplies – including hyper / hypo treatments and a backup insulin pen with you. If you are disconnected from your insulin pump for longer than 30 – 60 minutes you may need to reconnect to your insulin pump and give a correction dose (if safe to do so) or give a correction dose with your back up insulin delivery mechanism if you are still within the exposure range. You should follow your healthcare professional’s instructions to replace missed insulin or to correct a hypo.

No. Due to the high temperatures in saunas and steam rooms we recommend that you disconnect your pump and also remove your infusion set before entering. High temperatures can affect the insulin within your pump and also potentially cause damage to the pump itself.

Please consult with your healthcare professional to determine what precautions you should take prior to entering a sauna or steam room.

The Accu-Chek Combo has an IPX8 rating. This means that it is protected from brief immersion in water. As small hairline cracks in the housing of the device, or adapters and battery caps not being tightened enough, could cause water to get into the device and cause damage, we recommend that you disconnect your insulin pump and leave it in a safe place before swimming, showering or bathing. This should only be done following advice from your healthcare professional, and you should test and correct as necessary at least every hour.

Some types of medical examinations, such as MRIs, CT scans and X-Rays, may interfere with the operation of your insulin pump. As such, you should disconnect the insulin pump from the body and leave it in a safe place outside of the treatment room.

If you use a steel infusion set, you may also be required to remove the infusion set for some procedures. Please consult with a healthcare professional prior to the procedure.

Bubbles naturally occur in all liquids, including insulin, when they undergo a fairly rapid temperature change, i.e. warm to cool.

To help to prevent bubbles, remove insulin from the fridge at least an hour before use. If you are self-filling cartridges, make sure to fill the cartridge with room-temperature insulin and draw it from the vial slowly and steadily.

You should regularly check your cartridge and tubing for bubbles and prime out any that you find. Always remember to disconnect from your insulin pump before priming.

Because Accu-Chek insulin pumps can be disconnected at the infusion site you can remove the pump temporarily (for up to an hour) to bathe, go swimming or take part in contact sports.

Always remember to check your blood glucose and correct as needed before disconnecting your insulin pump and again when you reconnect. If you are intending to be disconnected from your pump for longer than an hour, you should check your blood glucose regularly throughout the time you are disconnected, reconnecting and correcting as necessary.

You should discuss your personal requirements for disconnecting from your insulin pump with your healthcare professional before going ahead.

Early occlusion detection is an important factor for safe and effective insulin pump therapy.

An occlusion is an unexpected event where the flow of insulin from a pump into the subcutaneous tissue is blocked.

The patient is typically not aware that an occlusion has occurred.

Due to missed insulin, a malfunction can often result in elevated bG levels, which if undetected can lead to hyperglycemia or Ketosis with the risk for the development of life threatening Diabetic Ketoacidosis (DKA).¹

With its faster occlusion detection, the Accu-Chek Combo system may help to reduce the severity of hyperglycemia and minimizes the risk of ketoacidosis resulting from occlusions.

The Accu-Chek Performa Combo meter uses Accu-Chek Performa test strips.

We recommend the use of Lithium batteries where possible. The Accu-Chek Spirit Combo insulin pump uses 1 AA battery (LR6 1.5 V AA alkaline, FR6 1.5 V AA lithium or 1.2 V rechargeable NiMH HR6 AA). You must select the correct battery type in the insulin pump setup when you replace your battery.

Do NOT use carbon-zinc, nickel-cadmium (NiCd) or super heavy duty batteries.

The Accu-Chek Smart Pix software is an Information Management Software Application for persons with diabetes and/or their health care professionals. The Accu-Chek Smart Pix software allows download of data from compatible devices to a computer where it can be saved, displayed, reviewed, analyzed and evaluated to support the treatment of diabetes. It aims to support the optimization of personal diabetes therapy through informed therapy decisions in two ways: by monitoring disease parameters in everyday life and by visualizing the personal therapy status.

Recommended storage conditions: the product should be stored in clean and dry rooms. Storage temperature: 5°C to 40°C.

Used pen needles should be disposed of safely in accordance with the local regulations.

Your doctor will prescribe you the drug for your treatment. Before injecting, ask your doctor or health care professional for advice on choosing the needle gage and length and proper injection technique.

Immediately before your first injection, carefully read the Instructions For Use of the pen needles and your pen injector as well as the Patient Information Leaflet of your drug. There may be certain differences for subcutaneous injections depending on your disease, drug and treatment regime.

The injection site and technique should be recommended to you by your healthcare professional.

The recommended injection techniques are:

  • Injection with a skin fold at a 90° angle. It is recommended that you inject into a skin fold vertically (at a 90° angle) to prevent too deep an injection and hitting the muscle tissue. To make a skin fold when injecting, pinch the skin between the thumb and forefinger and do not pull up the muscle.
  • Injection with a skin fold at a 45° angle. This injection technique is only recommended when you have very little subcutaneous fatty tissue. The minimum angle should be 45°. If the angle is less than 45°, the drug may not reach the subcutaneous fatty tissue and result in wealing or bruising at the injection site.
  • Injection without a skin fold at a 90° angle: if your layer of subcutaneous fatty tissue is very thick, you can make an injection without a skin fold. When you do not use a skin fold, it is recommended that you inject at a 90° angle and choose a short or medium-length needle (up to 6 mm).
  • A correct skin fold is made by lifting the skin with the thumb and index finger (possibly adding the middle finger). If the skin is lifted using the whole hand, muscle may be lifted as well as subcutaneous tissue, which can lead to intramuscular injections.

The recommended injection sites are: abdomen, thigh, buttock, upper arm.
Avoid injecting a site showing signs of skin damage, sites of lipohypertrophy, inflammation, edema, ulceration, or infection.

Injections should be spaced at least 1 cm from the previous injection site. Regular rotation of the injection site helps to maintain healthy tissue and avoid damage called lipohypertrophy.

Priming entails seeing at least a drop of insulin at the tip of the needle. Once free flow is verified, the patient may dial the desired dose and inject.

Injections in the belly should be approximately 4 cm away from the navel. The tissue close to the belly button is tougher, so the insulin absorption will be incorrect.

It is important to dispose of used lancets so they cannot cause injury. Whilst used Accu-Chek FastClix lancet drums can safely be disposed of in household waste, some local councils provide a sharps disposal service by supplying individuals with sharps bins and collecting them when they are full.

We recommend that the drums are stored in their original packaging. Keep your drums clean and protect them from extremes of temperature.

The most comfortable setting of your Accu-Chek FastClix lancing device will depend on a few things:

  • Your skin – softer, thinner skin requires a shallower setting than thicker skin.
  • The required blood sample – the more blood you require, the higher the setting you'll need.
  • The optimal penetration depth is a combination of both. Start with a low setting when using the device for the first time. Adjust to a higher setting until the blood volume is correct.

It is highly recommended to use a new, sterile lancet every time a test is performed. This is based on hygienic considerations and to help avoid infection. Additionally, the tip of a new needle is sharp, with optimal form and cut and therefore ensures gentle lancing. This is diminished with multiple use.

Never use a lancet that has been used by someone else, or share the finger pricker with anyone, to guard against cross infection.

No, for safety and hygiene reasons, once the lancet has been changed it is not possible to re-select a previous one.

No. Safety hooks are in place to prevent accidental reuse of a used drum. A used drum is easily recognised by the red stripes on the side.

  • The penetration depth is too shallow. Please select a higher penetration depth setting.
  • The Accu-Chek FastClix finger pricker needs to be pressed firmly against the skin. Check if a lancet is inserted in the finger pricker.
  • Sometimes the blood does not appear immediately after lancing. Massaging the finger by gently squeezing it towards the fingertip helps to form a drop of blood.

No. The device has a uniquely designed and engineered safety mechanism. For easy differentiation the release button is depressed and locked in the housing after use.

No. The Accu-Chek Safe-T-Pro Uno lancing device is not designed and intended to be used with AST.

Yes. Since 2014 it has been possible to use this device also on children under 1 year of age and neonates.
